Air Conditioning Basics
The four main components to your air conditioner are:
Condenser: The condenser is the outside metal unit and where the gas from the compressor is condensed into a liquid. The gas entering the condenser is very hot. The temperature is then lowered, so the gas can convert back to a liquid.
Compressor: The compressor is inside the condenser. It circulates the pressurized refrigerant, to concentrate the heat, and changes the low pressure gas to high pressure.
Evaporator: The evaporator is the part of the system inside the home. In simple language, it absorbs the heat from your home.
Expansion Valve: The expansion valve controls the amount of refrigerant in your system.
All of these pieces are connected by a copper tube that handles refrigerant, creating a closed loop. Heat is collected in the evaporator, sent outside to the condenser. The heat is removed, and the cool air is recirculated back into your home.
AC Facts
An Air Conditioner Doesn’t Create Cool Air.
What happens in the AC process is actually the removal of heat from the air. Your AC uses a chemical called refrigerant to remove heat and transfer it outside. The warm air runs through the lines and coils in your unit and goes from liquid to gas and back again. During this process, the refrigerant removes the heat and transfers it elsewhere so that when the air comes out the other side, it is cool.
Your AC Will Remove Humidity.
Lower humidity helps the overall comfort level in your home by making you feel cooler, even if the temperature is the same.
Your Air Filter Needs To Be Checked And Replaced Every Three To Six Months.
(depending on the manufacturer’s recommendations)
A dirty air filter restricts your air flow, which reduces efficiency, costing you money, and over time can put stress on your unit and could cause a costly repair.
Maintenance, Maintenance, Maintenance.
Your air conditioner needs regular checkups to keep it running in tip-top shape. Having regular annual preventative maintenance will bring your system longer life and fewer breakdowns overall.
SEER
The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) measures air conditioning and heat pump cooling efficiency, which is calculated by the cooling output for a typical cooling season divided by the total electric energy input during the same time frame. A higher SEER rating means greater energy efficiency.
At Vertex Mechanical, we provide all the services you need to keep your AC running in top-notch shape. Call us at 717-335-2633 for repairs, maintenance, or new-system installation.

Air Conditioning and Gas Furnace Installation in Stevens, PA 17578
“I cannot put this plainly enough. My wife and I HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend Vertex Mechanical Inc. They are extremely professional, honest, and reasonable. Like we do yearly, Vertex came out to do general maintenance on our system that my wife and I both knew was probably end of life. We had Tony this time for a service visit and to diagnose and fix an issue with our heater. He was extremely thorough, efficient, very knowledgeable, and patient. He took the time to thoroughly explain both the issue and the fix (replacement). Basically, we had no heat or AC in the house.
That same day, Scott Martin came out at the house assessing the needs. He then came back the following day with a plan. The important key here was that it was a very professionally detailed “a la carte” plan; there was no pressure, there was no up-sell. Scott spent the time explaining, went over all options, answered all my questions (silly or not), and let us choose. And that’s what we did.
Within days (over the weekend) Vertex got the equipment they needed and installed on the following Monday. ONE DAY replacement of a natural gas furnace and AC unit, plus outside condenser….the install technicians were just as amazing; thorough, worked steady, and got it done, even with all the new challenges they faced with a new system. And let me tell you folks: it’s a mess pulling that much old equipment out and putting new in. But you could never tell. They were proactive in making sure they caught as much as they could, and then thoroughly cleaned up everything before they left. I’m not easily impressed….but these 3 men impressed me with their respect, work ethic, and talents.
I latch on to companies I trust once I find them; I will never use anyone except Vertex moving forward. I cannot recommend them any more than that.”
Air Conditioner Replacement
“Our AC broke down on a Thursday and I called Vertex the same day. Scott came to the house on Thursday and did some measurements then sent me a quote for some options on Friday. I called Scott on Friday and agreed to the one option and the new unit was installed the following Tuesday. The technicians arrived on time on the scheduled day. They removed the old system and installed the new system. They cleaned up the areas and the work was completed in one day. They were very professional and courteous. The new system works great and is much more efficient than the old one.”
